Try the state superintendant of schools and also the websites for the school districts. Sometimes they show information on the composition of each school’s student body. For example, how many students get free lunches (which indicates poverty). They may also show how the school performs on statewide tests.

New Jersey

Each year the state of New Jersey publishes its “School Report Card”, and most of the area newspapers take the data, repackage and republish it. Some do a better job of it than others, but all of it can be found online.
