Well, to take your question literally…

The cheapest way is to hitch-hike or use craigslist’s rideshare.

The second cheapest is by Greyhound bus. Probably $100-150 rt.+ 1/2 off for a companion.

But I’m surprised that was the best flight. Try cheaptickets.com, orbitz, travelocity, etc. Try a flight from NYC, might be cheaper.

Most rental car companies, like Budget, have websites with prices on them.

Renting a car that receives 30 MPG on highway will still be cheaper than flying or taking the train. If one rents a SUV with 20 MPG, gas costs will go up 50% and remain cheaper than the train or plane.
