Not all of Newark is bad but most of it is. If you want to live in Newark, check out the Ironbound area (close to Newark Penn Station), There is always a lot of police around and because of the many tourists that are in and out of the terminal, it’s the safest area in that city.

If you’re able to afford it, check cities that are close to NYC (most convenient) – Hoboken, Jersey City, Harrison, etc.

Monmouth County is great. Not too crowded and friendly people.
You have Monmouth University there, which is a great college.

Let;s be real you got theives and murders every where, but if you are looking to go to school there are a few universities located down town newark. You could live somewhere close such as Montclair, Bloomfield, West Orange which are all considered suburbs but not far of a commute from Newark. Also you have south Jersey ( the shore) and North Jersey is not bad also.
