Jersey is stuck between Philly and NYC, and the residents tend to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder since they are little brothers to big cities on either end. Also, Jersey has more toxic waste sites than any other state in the US and their beaches have syringes wash up on shore. The citizens get touchy about that for some reason.
