There isn’t a “Sheraton” hotel in Jersey City (at least not according to the Sheraton website) but the Westin Jersey City Newport Hotel (479 Washington Blvd) is associated with the Sheraton chain so assuming that is where you will be:

From there walk along Washington Blvd to the PATH station on Pavonia Av. Take a 33rd St bound PATH train to 33rd St. Fare $1.75.

From there walk down 32nd or 33rd St to Penn Station. In Penn station you have 2 options:

1) Take a LIRR train to Jamaica station. From there you can get the AirTrain to your terminal in JFK. LIRR Fare is: $7.25 during peak times (rush hours) , $5.75 during off-peak hours. Make sure you buy the ticket BEFORE you board the train otherwise there is a surcharge of up to $4.75. The AirTrain fare is $5.00.

2) Go past the LIRR in Penn Station to the A, C and E subway station (letters in blue circles). Take a DOWNTOWN A train that is bound for Far Rockaway (not Lefferts Blvd) to the Howard Beach station. The AirTrain is upstairs at Howard Beach. Fares: subway $2, Airtrain $5.00.

OR

2A) Take an UPTOWN E train to the Sutphin Blvd station. Go upstairs and after you exit the turnstiles, take the elevator to the LIRR level (top level). Walk across the LIRR waiting area to the other side , go thru the doors and make a right. Walk to the AirTrain turnstiles. Fare: subway $2.00, AirTrain $5.00.

It is difficult to say whether 2 or 2A is the better. Some prefer going to Howard Beach, others like the Sutphin Blvd route.
