Should I file as New Jersey or South Carolina Resident After Sale of Indiana Business?

Tom C asked:

I am about to sell a business that is located in Indiana. I will have profits from the sale that are fairly substantial. I own homes in South Carolina and New Jersey and spend large amounts of time at both. I have been filing as a New Jersey resident, but am fearful that there may be additional taxes associated with filing in NJ. Would it benefit me to file as a South Carolina resident, and if so, how is it best to prove such residency?

I am using TurboTax to pay my taxes, and I have to buy a state for my state taxes. Well, I currently live in Texas with no state tax, but earlier in the year my residency was in New Jersey and I worked in California for a month. Do I do California state taxes or New Jersey? Do I even have to do taxes since it was only a month? I’m having a really hard time finding this information online, thanks.

I just realized that I have to pay income taxes to New Jersey. I am very late at this point. What do I have to do to do this? What fines am I going to encur? I am fairly certain that I don’t owe anything. What forms do I need to fill out? I am a non-resident.

Is it legal to raffle a car in the state of New Jersey?

QuestionsAnswered asked:

I am trying to recoup costs of a car which I purchased last year. Basically it costs a decent amount of money (30,000) and I wish to attempt to sell tickets for a raffle which would allow the winner to then own the car and I would keep the raffle money. Im not sure if that is legal in the state of New Jersey, so I wanted to see if anyone knew if this was possible. Thanks for your help.

I live in the state of New Jersey and I’m going to be unemployed in the next month, so I was wondering how the state decides how much I’m entitled to in wages.
In a month I’m going to be unemployed and I need to know how much money a week I’ll be entitled to and for how long. Also I heard their is a formula and i would like to know that as well.

I am married filing jointly, and when I go through my NY non-resident tax return, it taxes me on all the income my wife and I both made last year. She works in New Jersey, and I only worked in NY for half the year. Shouldn’t I be taxed on just the money I made in NY?

Taxable income from sale of home?

chris k asked:

My grandmother recently passed and she deeded her home to the grandchildren. We took possesion of the home, this wasn’t inheritance by the way, and we have sold it. From what I understand I will have to claim this money as Income for 2007. I usually just use the 1040ez form because I don’t own property and I have no deductions or anything that would make me use the long form. My first question is can I still use the EZ form with this type of income? Secondly, will I get something in the mail to document these earning? I don’t think the attorney is making us fill out w9’s, so I’m not sure how to report this. Will this be considered as capital gains? I’ve heard they tax capital gains more significantly than earnings from employment.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Are college expenses, like books/tuition/parking, tax deductible?

Brenda asked:

I’m a grad student that started last fall. Back when I was an undergrad my dad did my taxes, but now that I am all grown up I have to do my own. :) In the past I’ve just had a job and did the EZ form, but now since I started school I saved all my receipts, because someone told me you can deduct this stuff.

1. Tuition and Fees (I don’t have many, cause I have an assistantship appointment, but I had some.)
2. Parking Fee
3. Books (I saved all my textbook receipts.)
4. Money spent on gas for commuting to school (I saved all these receipts too, just in case.)

Thanks much!!

P.S. I live in Illinois and attend a public university. Oh and I am married.

Tax-exempty status – Examples of Package 1023?

Posted by admin in United States  TAGS in United States

MJ H asked:

I am in the process of forming a non profit in NC. Since I was able to view completed Articles of Inc. on the NC Secretary of State site I was wondering if there is a website where I could view the paperwork (1023, 990, etc) involved in the 501(c)3 process.

I am interested in viewing completed applications. Assuming that a tax-exempt organization is open to scrutiny, because of its status, I would think that one would be able to view these forms in their entirety, as opposed to instructions and blank forms provided by irs.gov.

Past incorrect answers have been:

Form 990
www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f990.pdf
instructions
www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i990-ez.pdf

See Application for Exemption
www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1023.pdf

explanation of requirements:

IRS Publication 557 “”Tax Exempt Status for Your Organization”
www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p557.pdf

These are blank not completed forms.

Made a small mistake while doing 1040EZ tax form and need to know what to expect?

vikkmathis asked:

I received my W2 form in January and decided to quickly do my own taxes by filing through a 1040 EZ form that I received in the mail from IRS. While fillng out the form I accidently wrote down on line #7 that the federal income tax withheld was $2213.35. I didn’t read the rest of the form and assumed because I don’t claim anyone (including myself) on my W2 and that in the pass I’ve always received a refund I subtracted line 10 from 9 and though my refund would be $1172.25. I just received a letter yesterday from IRS that stated I have an amount due and must pay the amount mention above. I started freaking out, because I knew this was wrong and as the letter stated I needed to double check my form or send the amount mention. After double checking and fine toning every inch of the 1040 form I realize that on line #7 I actually wrote my Social security tax withdraw instead of my Federal income tax withheld. Even so after correcting it I’m still suppose to get $1113.10 back.
You see on line 7 I shouldn’t have wrote $2213.25. The amount I should have wrote was $4498.10. If I contact IRS and let them know about this mistake will they still give me my refund? Will I have to fill out a special form? Will they simply correct the mistake and send what’s due to me? and if so Will it take another 4-6 weeks before I receive my money? Has anyone ever made a mistake and had to correct their form and if so what happen? Any advise or comment would gladly be appreciated.
