I have a valid California and New Jersey drivers license. I bought a car in California but I want to register it in New Jersey without driving it there. How would I go about doing things like getting a New Jersey smog check in California? Or is there some sort of waiver im not aware of? Im also in the military if that helps any.
I dont see how you can go through NJ inspection in Ca, unless you get an helpful mechanic to cheat the system
A car has to be in registered in the state it spends the majority of the year in
Since you are active duty military, you can either register your car in CA or NJ. Virtually all states have a waiver program for military personnel that will allow you to register your car in your home state without traveling there for a smog or safety inspection, however you will only have a very few days to take care of that once you return to NJ, even if only for a visit. Contact a DMV office in NJ for the procedures.
The issue of 2 driver’s licenses is a matter of concern. Unless these are different types of licenses (say ordinary NJ license and motorcycle in CA) you may only have a valid license in ONE state at a time. At least one state, FL, does allow for a “snowbird” license for seasonal residents. It’s valid in FL only so does not violate the Federal law on one license per person. (And if either license if a CDL, having more than one is a Federal felony.)
